On June 20, 1991, Shaanxi History Museum opened in Xi'an, and it was the largest modern historical museum in China at the time.
On that day, Li Ruihuan (李瑞環), then member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and Secretary of the Secretariat, Ma Wenrui (馬文瑞), Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Zhang Boxing (張勃興), Secretary of the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the CPC, and others participated in the opening ceremony and cut the ribbon.
The construction of Shaanxi History Museum commenced on July 1, 1987, and the investment reached 144 million RMB. It is a key project of China's 7th Five-Year Plan.
The museum covers an area of about 70,000 square metres, with a construction area of 56,000 square metres, nearly 10 times the scale of the original Xi'an Beilin Museum.
The architectural style of Shaanxi History Museum has absorbed the grandeur and simplicity of Tang Dynasty architecture and has borrowed from the structural features of traditional Chinese palaces.
It has adopted modern technologies and building materials, as well as the elegant colour tones. The entire building has the charm of Tang Dynasty architecture, yet exudes the grandeur of modern architecture, ancient and solemn but also majestic and splendid.
The museum exhibits around 3,000 precious cultural relics from various eras including prehistoric, Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Yuan, Ming, and Qing.
Most of them are rare treasures belonging to the first and second classes of national cultural relics, especially the genuine murals from Tang tombs which are particularly breath-taking.
